With 29 separate sites serving more than 18,000 K-12 students in Nashville, NC, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools has assessed the energy performance of 100 percent of its schools.  In 2006, 13 of the district's buildings earned a 75 or better in EPA's energy performance rating system, and they were the first K-12 schools in North Carolina to earn the ENERGY STAR. In 2007, 11 more buildings earned the  ENERGY STAR. The district received recognition for a 10 percent improvement in energy efficiency in 2006 and continued this effort by reaching a 20 percent improvement later in the same year.  In 2008, the district became a Top Performer by achieving an average energy performance rating of 75 or better across its building portfolio.

Due to rising energy costs, the district committed to an energy-reduction program with support from the central office, board of education, maintenance department, and school administrators.  Since it began to implement the program, Nash-Rocky Mount reduced energy use by more than 18.8 million kWh and achieved cost avoidance savings of more than $3.1 million from September 2004 to August 2007.  The district's partnerships with Educon Educational Consulting, Yamas Controls, Johnson Controls, and the State Energy Office helped it teach behavior change to faculty and students, change direct digital control systems to more energy-efficient controls, participate in State-sponsored tune-ups for district facilities, and increase preventive maintenance.

Nash-Rocky Mount Schools joined ENERGY STAR in 2006.
