10% Improvement (2005)

West St. Paul/Mendota Heights/Eagan Independent School District (ISD) 197 educates 4,600 students in eight school sites in the Twin Cities metro area. The school district became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2005 when it joined the Schools for Energy Efficiency (SEE) program to help reduce energy-related expenses. Using the SEE program approach of combining operations and awareness, students and staff have acted proactively by monitoring energy use and turning off lights and computers. The building engineers have made tremendous strides by reevaluating and continuously monitoring each building's use of heating, cooling, water, and electricity.

Since launching the SEE program in September 2003, the district has reduced its energy use by 15 percent and avoided about $113,000 in energy costs. When it earned ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition, it was the first school district in Minnesota recognized by EPA for district-wide improvement.
