bad hair day

Mona Island, Puerto Rico, March 2004

My research focuses on the investigation and development of information integration systems for data-intensive, collaborative and multi-disciplinary applications. It includes the management, integration, and accessibility of data and information, in particular but not exclusively, through the use of metadata and ontology systems. Ontology-based classification and ontology representation languages allow knowledge discovery and some degree of interoperability based on semantic content. Agent-based systems as a vehicle for demonstrating the operational use of ontologies are part of this interest.

I apply this research in the context of international standardization, scientific applications (in particular those of interest to the DOE Office of Science), multi-disciplinary collaboratories, and Grid computing. This extends to Semantic Web technologies and the Semantic Grid.

A Knowledge-Based Middleware and Visualization Framework for the Virtual Soldier

The Virtual Soldier Project investigates methods to represent and predict physiological, electro-mechanical, and anatomical properties of individual medical data for assisting care on the battlefield. The ORNL and University of South Carolina joint-team, for which I am co-PI, addresses complex aspects of data, information, and knowledge integration across VSP teams and modules as required for the modeling and visualization of a disturbance of anatomical and physiological properties. Sponsor: DARPA.

The Earth System Grid: Turning Climate Model Datasets into Community Resources.

ESG is a project of the U.S. Department of Energy Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing program. My contribution is the research and design of prototype ontologies for ESG and active participation in the development of the ESG metadata schema. The ESG1.1 ontology is documented here.

The Process Specification Language (PSL)

PSL is an ontology and a specification language written in the Knowledge Interchange Format (KIF) to express manufacturing and design processes. By the ned of 2005, PSL will have reached the level of International Standard (ISO 18629) in the International Standard Organization, Industrial Automation Systems and Integration, Industrial Data (SC4). I am SC4 Expert Scientist, Project Editor for ISO 18629 Parts 4XXX, and PI for ORNL. Sponsor: the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Here is a toy example of PSL in action.

An Ontology-based, 3D Visualization System for the Holomer

A fine grain 3D visualization of foot anatomy with a navigational feature displaying ontological entities of the Foundational Model Anatomy. With Stewart Dickson. Completed.

Materials Microcharacterization Collaboratory

A DOE 2000 Collaboratory project. With collaborator Omer Rana, we designed and implemented an agent-based system for decision support and administration of proposals to the user facility and instruments. Completed.
