The Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (Robert M. Cushman, Director), which includes the World Data Center for Atmospheric Trace Gases, is the primary global-change data and information analysis center of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

CDIAC responds to data and information requests from users from all over the world who are concerned with the greenhouse effect and global climate change. CDIAC's data holdings include records of the concentrations of carbon dioxide and other radiatively active gases in the atmosphere; the role of the terrestrial biosphere and the oceans in the biogeochemical cycles of greenhouse gases; emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere; long-term climate trends; the effects of elevated carbon dioxide on vegetation; and the vulnerability of coastal areas to rising sea level.
On the other hand, CDIAC does not specialize in information on the medical aspects of carbon dioxide exposure, or industrial and household uses of carbon dioxide (for example, commercial sources of canisters of compressed CO2 gas, or fire extinguisher supplies).

CDIAC is supported by DOE's Environmental Sciences Division of the Office of Biological and Environmental Research. CDIAC represents DOE in the multi-agency Global Change Data and Information System. Wanda Ferrell is DOE's Program Manager with responsibility for CDIAC.

East-West Center Washington
Muthiah Alagappa, Director
(202) 293-3995, Ext. 20

The East-West Center is an internationally recognized education and research organization established by the U.S. Congress to strengthen understanding and relations between the United States and the countries of the Asia Pacific region. The Center helps promote the establishment of a stable, peaceful and prosperous Asia Pacific community in which the United States is a natural, valued and leading partner.

As mandated by the Congress, the Center carries out its mission through programs of cooperative study, training and research. Professionals and students from the United States, Asia and the Pacific study and work together at the East-West Center to better understand issues of common and critical concern and explore mutually beneficial ways of addressing them.

As a national and regional resource, the Center offers:

An interdisciplinary research program that examines major issues of critical importance in U.S.-Asia-Pacific relations.

Dialogue and professional enrichment programs that focus on groups central to the communication of ideas: the media, political and policy leaders, and educators.

Educational programs to develop the human resources needed by the United States and the Asia Pacific region in a new era of increased interdependence.

As a public, non-profit corporation, the Center receives core funding for its programs from a U.S. government appropriation. Nine other Asia Pacific governments contribute to East-West Center programs. An increasing share of Center support comes from grants and contracts from governments, foundations, international agencies, corporations, and private individuals. An 18-member international board governs the East-West Center.

The East-West Center president is Charles E. Morrison.
