Title: Estimates for Green's functions of Schrodinger operators; also, a pure mathematician's adventures in wavelet applications

Dr. Michael W. Frazier is head of the UT Mathematics Department. Prior to coming to Tennessee, Frazier was associate chair of the Mathematics Department at Michigan State University. He also completed postdoctoral fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and at the Mathematical Science Research Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. Frazier holds doctoral and master's degrees in mathematics from the University of California-Los Angeles, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Abstract:

This talk will consist of two unrelated parts. In the first part, Dr. Fraizer will describe recent work on estimating the Green's function for Schrodinger operators and related alpha-stable processes. In the second part Dr. Fraizer will explain how his background in wavelets led him to work on a couple of projects in applied and industrial mathematics, namely the detection of enemy submarines and the analysis of automobile rattles.
