Police Legal Advisor Training Program (PLATP)

The Police Legal Advisor Training Program is an advance program developed and taught by the Legal Division of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Department of Homeland Security. The program is an intensive, week-long course that is held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia. The forty (40) hour program covers areas of the law most applicable to the function of a legal advisor within a law enforcement agency. Those topics presented include: Fourth Amendment, Self-Incrimination, Civil Liability, Practical Exercise Development, Homeland Security Legal Issues, Use of Force law, Pursuit Liability, Ethics, Internal Affairs Investigations, Electronic Law and Evidence, and Current Issues for Police Attorneys.

Instructors

On average, LGD instructors have over 17 years of law enforcement experience, either as judges, prosecuting attorneys in federal, state, and military courts, police legal advisors, counsel for law enforcement agencies, or as federal or state law enforcement officers.  LGD instructors are currently licensed to practice law in the highest courts of 15 states, numerous state, federal, and military courts, and the United States Supreme Court.  Individual LGD instructors have published articles in a variety of professional law enforcement publications, such as Police Chief Magazine, and one member of the LGD staff has authored a book entitled, “The Sixth Circuit Criminal Law Handbook.”

Tuition and Cost

FLETC Glynco Programs - The approximate total cost is currently less than $700.00. Costs will vary depending upon where students are lodged. This includes: lodging, meals, tuition, and course materials. Students are responsible for all travel costs to the Brunswick, Georgia area. Limited shuttle service is available to and from the Brunswick airport.

Export Programs - The approximate cost is $130.00.  This includes tuition and course materials.  This DOES NOT include travel, lodging, and meals which are the individual responsibility of each student.

The course is designed for currently employed attorneys for state and local law enforcement agencies and departments. Managers of those agencies and departments are invited on a space available basis.

Additional Information

CLE Credit

Students must self-apply to their respective State Bar to obtain CLE credit.  A course syllabus, schedule, and instructor biographies will be provided to assist in this process.

1. Who is this course designed for?

The course is designed for currently employed attorneys for state and local law enforcement agencies and departments.  Managers of those agencies and departments are invited on a space available basis.

2. Where is the training held?

The training is held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia.

3. What is the payment policy?

Your agency will be billed for the total cost of your attendance at the program 30-45 days after the completion of the program. The amount will not exceed the per person amount indicated in the program announcement.

4. Can the course be cancelled?

The minimum required number of students to hold this course is twenty (20) students.  The FLETC reserves the right to cancel the course if the minimum required number of students is not met.
