2007 Solano Recovery Day-Sixth Annual Rally and Barbeque
Description
The Solano Prevention and Recovery Alliance (SPRA) and the Fighting Back Partnership join in sponsoring the Sixth Annual Rally and Barbeque to celebrate National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

Recovering is hard to do Solano County celebrates addiction recovery in Vallejo By ANDREA WOLF /Vallejo Times-Herald staff writer The sleeves of faded blue prison tattoos covering Ronald Rikers arms and the scars on his face are proof his life has not been easy. Rikers, 47, started drinking and smoking marijuana at 8 years old, and had moved onto methamphetamine and other drugs by age 11. After spending decades in and out of prison, Rikers, of Vallejo, has now been sober for almost two years, and credits the Genesis House with his ability to keep his life together. "I have so much gratitude for the people there," Rikers said of the Genesis House, a long-term recovery program in Vallejo. "They gave me a chance and saved my life." Similar stories of addiction and recovery were abundant Saturday at the sixth annual Solano Recovery Day Celebration held at City Park in Vallejo. Hundreds of people came out for the event and enjoyed the music, free barbecue and a chance for recovering addicts and their loved ones to come out and celebrate being sober. "It's great to get everyone out so members of the community can see the stereotypes of what recovering addicts look like are not real," said Dennis Wade, an event organizer. "Events like this help fight the stigma." Many recovery organizations and 12-step programs from around the county came out for the party sponsored by the Solano County Prevention and Recovery Alliance and the Vallejo Fighting Back Partnership. "I can't put words to what it's like to see all these old friends together today," Rikers said. "It is like one big family get-together out here." The theme this year was "Saving Lives, Saving Dollars," a message to the community that spending tax dollars on addiction treatment is a wise investment and incarceration for addicts does not productively address the illness, Wade said. "If the state spends $35,000 to $50,000 incarcerating an addict for a year, at the end of it you have someone who served time," Wade said. "If you spend $8,000 to $10,000, which is what it costs for a year of recovery treatment, you have someone who is sober, ready to work and a contributing member to society." In addition to speakers and personal testimonies from the recovery community, three people were rewarded with the James McCarver Jr. award, which recognizes those in Solano County who have worked tirelessly in areas of substance abuse and treatment. "Today is about taking the time to celebrate those who are part of the solutions rather than those people or things that are part of the problem," said Donna Wapner, who was awarded the James McCarver award for her work as an addiction studies educator at Diablo Valley College. "We all have 'aha!' moments in our life. Times when we see things start to make sense that we did not see before. Meaningful education triggers 'aha!' moments, and it is one of the keys that will finally open the door to more effective, researched policy and treatment options." Other award recipients were John Allen, a community activist for the Vallejo Fighting Back Partnership, and Gloria Flores, a substance abuse therapist for Dixon Family Service. Recovery organizations came from all over the county to network with one another and just enjoy a party with people who have been through similar struggles. "It's good for people to know that they are not alone. Everyone here has something in common," said Renee Prusso, an assimilator for the Solano Valley Church Celebrate Recovery Group in Fairfield. Held in Fairfiled the last five years, this was the first time the Solano Recovery Day has been held in Vallejo. "We had a little competition today from other events, but this has been a great turn out," Wade said. "We want to try and reach as many people in the county as we can." The aim of the rally is to spread the message that recovery from addiction is possible, that treatment for people in need is compassionate public policy and a sound investment. Title
Addictions Counselor Day 2007
Description
Whereas, addiction counselors are uniquely qualified, frontline health care professionals who are indispensable in the process of guiding patients with addictive disorders to recovery;

Whereas, alcohol and drug disorders are a major public health problem that costs American society more than $300 billion each year, affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds and in all communities through treatment, education, and prevention programs; and

Whereas, addictive disorders are a treatable disease and treatment of addiction is as successful as the treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma; and

Whereas, tens of thousands of addiction-focused health care professionals have dedicated their lives to increasing awareness of alcohol and drug disorders and enhancing the care of individuals, families, and communities through treatment, education and prevention programs; and

Whereas, addiction counselors promote excellence in care by promoting the highest quality and most up-to-date, science-based services to our clients, our families and our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gary A. Rosenberg, Garrison Commander of the United States Army Garrison Bamberg, do hereby proclaim 20 September 2007
