Addictions Counselor Day 2007
Description
Whereas, addiction counselors are uniquely qualified, frontline health care professionals who are indispensable in the process of guiding patients with addictive disorders to recovery;

Whereas, alcohol and drug disorders are a major public health problem that costs American society more than $300 billion each year, affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds and in all communities through treatment, education, and prevention programs; and

Whereas, addictive disorders are a treatable disease and treatment of addiction is as successful as the treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma; and

Whereas, tens of thousands of addiction-focused health care professionals have dedicated their lives to increasing awareness of alcohol and drug disorders and enhancing the care of individuals, families, and communities through treatment, education and prevention programs; and

Whereas, addiction counselors promote excellence in care by promoting the highest quality and most up-to-date, science-based services to our clients, our families and our communities;

Recovery Awards Breakfast
Description
The Recovery Awards Breakfast brings together recovering people, friends and families, as well as professionals working in the addictions field.

The celebration highlights individuals and agencies that demonstrated compassion and commitment to supporting the recovery of individuals and families who suffer from the negative consequences of substance use.

The following honors are conferred at the breakfast:

Public Servant Award: This award is given in honor of an individual who demonstrates initiative, foresight and active participation in their official capacity and advocates for community investment in the support of treatment. This years recipient is the Honorable Cindy Intschert, Jefferson County District Attorney.

Marsala Wertman Award: This award is given in honor of the founding members in Jefferson Countys treatment and recovery community. This years recipient is Albert Speno who devoted many years to helping young men build a strong foundation for recovery via his determination to build on their personal strengths and capacity to instill a Can Do! attitude. Mr. Speno is presently employed at Jefferson Community College.

Gerald DeGroot Award: This award was developed in honor of former officer Gerald DeGroot who promoted awareness of substance abuse in the community. Sergeant DeGroot had a tour of duty lasting 19 years and ended tragically when an intoxicated driver struck his vehicle. This years recipient is Maureen Young, CASAC. Ms. Young holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and was selected for her many years of promoting recovery by outstanding community service. Ms. Young is presently employed at Samaritan Behavioral Health.

Community Service Award: This honor is reserved for an organization, business, or industry in recognition of their contributions to the field of alcohol and substance abuse prevention and treatment. Honored for the support of recovery media promotion will be WWNY TV - 7 News. Accepting the award on behalf of WWNY TV - 7 News at this years ceremony will be Catherine Pirsuk, the general manager. The responsiveness to helping our prevention and treatment agencies to spread the message of hope for recovery and the message that we want our young people to be supported in making healthy choices has been invaluable.
