Federal Bureau of Investigation

U.S. Department of Justice
Washington, D.C.

October 11, 2007

Good morning. The FBI is proud to be a part of the Export Enforcement Initiative.

We know that foreign states and terrorist organizations are actively seeking the knowledge and technology required to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Effective export controls remain critical in preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, their delivery systems, and related technology.

The Bureau is uniquely situated to pursue export violations where there is a nexus to foreign counterintelligence, and we look forward to bringing that expertise to combat export control violations.

Nationwide, the FBI has established close working relationships with the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); the Department of Commerce, Office of Export Enforcement; the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls; and other agencies on a wide range of successful export control investigations.

The FBI’s National Security Branch, in particular the Counterintelligence Division, continues to coordinate significant investigative activity with its law enforcement and intelligence community partners in the area of export control violations. The Bureau will continue to fully participate in all national counterproliferation initiatives, especially those promulgated under the leadership of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

Thank you.
