FBI Director Robert S. Mueller Appoints Nathan T. Gray to be Special Agent in Charge of the Charlotte Field Office

Washington, D.C. – FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III today announced the appointment of Nathan T. Gray to be Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Charlotte, North Carolina, Field Office. The Charlotte Office has federal jurisdiction within all 100 counties of North Carolina.

Mr. Gray brings to the position extensive management experience, informed by over 26 years in law enforcement, and a broad based knowledge of national security, investigative, and administrative issues. He began his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department in 1979, and spent 10 years with the Department.

He joined the FBI as a Special Agent in 1990, and first served in the Houston Field Office where he investigated Violent Crime and Drug matters. In 1997, he was promoted to a Supervisory position in the Organized Crime Section at FBI Headquarters, and was detailed to the CIA’s Crime and Narcotics Center. In this position he was responsible for the investigation of Southwest Asian drug trafficking matters. In 1999 he was assigned to the Inspection Division where he conducted evaluations of FBI field and Headquarters divisions.

In 2000, Mr. Gray was promoted to supervisor of the Cincinnati Office’s Domestic Terrorism Squad in Columbus, Ohio. During that time he also served as the supervisor of the division's Joint Terrorism Task Force, and oversaw the Athens, Cambridge and Portsmouth Resident Agencies. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Mr. Gray was temporarily assigned on several occasions to the Islamabad and Riyadh Legal Attaché Offices.

In 2002, Mr. Gray served as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Office where he oversaw the Civil Rights, Counterintelligence, Cyber, and Violent Crimes Programs. He also provided direction for all administrative matters within the Phoenix Office.

From 2004 to the present, he has served as the Special Assistant to Deputy Director John S. Pistole. In this capacity, he assisted the Deputy Director in his oversight and administration of the FBI and coordinated high-level projects related to implementation of the National Security Branch, the Intelligence Program, security, budget, information technology, executive performance, and other critical aspects of the FBI’s transformation efforts.

Deputy Director Pistole said, “Nate has been an invaluable resource to me and to the entire leadership team. He’ll be sorely missed at Headquarters. But with his operational, intelligence, and administrative expertise, I know he will serve the Charlotte Office and the people of North Carolina very well.”

Mr. Gray was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. He received a B.A in Education from Faith Baptist College in Ankeny, Iowa, and a Masters Degree in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University. He is married and has two sons.
