The NHSDA Report:  Cigarette Brand Preferences

Highlights:

  • Past month smoking was reported in SAMHSA's National Household Survey on Drug Abuse by 13 percent of youth aged 12-17, 39 percent of adults aged 18-25, and 24 percent of adults aged 26 and older.
  • About 85 percent of cigarette smokers aged 12 to 25 smoked one of the three most used brands.
  • Smokers aged 26 or older reported more diversity in cigarette brand selection than younger smokers.
  • White and Hispanic smokers were most likely to smoke Marlboro while black smokers were most likely to smoke Newport.

This Short Report, The NHSDA Report:  Cigarette Brand Preferences,  is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health (formerly called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse) conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's NHSDA/NSDUH is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   Estimates are also available for drug use by state.
