1st Annual Learning & Turning Fall Festival Celebrating National Recovery Month
Description
The White County Meth Task Force announces plans for the First Annual Learning & Turning Fall Festival " Celebrating National Recovery Month". The community is invited to the day-long celebration on the lawn of Truett-McConnell College. Highlights include a variety of music ranging from our very own local bluegrass bands to Christian rock groups. Arts and crafts booths will be on display along with local potters demonstrating the turning of pottery. Children will have an opportunity to try their hand at creating their own master piece. A variety of food vendors will also be present. In addition to the Arts and Crafts portion, booths will also feature a Health Fair with local Health Professionals providing educational information concerning Methamphetamine and other addictions. Planned children's activities include rock climbing, bungee jumping, a trackless train ride, hayrides, dunking booth, slides and much more!

In celebration of National Recovery Month, Motivational Speakers and Officials from public health, law and government will be present to speak on addiction, drug use, and statistics in our community. District Attorney Stan Gunter, law enforcement officials, probation officers and government officials will also be helping in the fund raising efforts by taking their chances in the dunking booth.

Two members of "The Power Team" will be performing during the days activities. Their message is simple."Live a life of excellence." Make the right choices, set goals, resist peer pressure, overcome the past, academic achievement, self-awareness & value, respect authority, be aware of the dangers of drugs/alcohol/ violence/ depression & suicide, realize that "true love" waits. Craving in addiction is an ill-defined, but universally consistent part of the experience of addiction. In recent years, neuroscientists have partly delineated the underlying neural circuitry of this phenomenon. Every caregiver that manages addicted individuals through any aspect of the addiction and recovery process should be familiar with craving and its treatment.

This three hour workshop will present current concepts in the neurophysiology of craving in addictive disease. Using this framework, the workshop will examine new medications used in the management of craving delineating the proper medication use and medication timing. The workshop will discuss the use of naltrexone (oral and long-acting intramuscular forms) and acamprosate. Other experimental medications will be described as well. The workshop will examine the interplay between therapy, medications and self-help groups, keeping the clients needs at the center of the discussion.

As a mental health professional, it is likely that you are being confronted by an increasing number of clients with alcohol and drug problems. At the same time, you may be finding that traditional treatment approaches are neither professionally satisfying nor capable of reaching the increasingly diverse population now seeking your services. You may also be finding that existing approaches are not cost-effective.

At this workshop, 40 years of research on what works in the field of alcohol and drug treatment will be translated into empirically supported therapeutic skills that you can actually use for the practical, efficient, and individualized problem drinkers in your clinical practice. Participants will not only learn how to deal with the most difficult and challenging clients, but also learn a method of incorporating valid and reliable outcome information into the treatment process.
