Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS)

PRMS is a modular design, distributed parameter, physical process watershed model developed to evaluate the effects of various combinations of precipitation, climate, and land use on watershed response. One of the objectives in the development of PRMS was to provide a modular modeling system that could be used to address a variety of interdisciplinary environmental and water resource problems. The modular concept enables the testing and development of a variety of modeling approaches that can incorporate knowledge from a broad range of scientific disciplines.

The Modular Modeling System (MMS) was developed to provide a framework in which PRMS, and any other model or model component, can be incorporated. MMS is an integrated system of software that has been developed to provide the research and operational framework needed to support development, testing, and evaluation of physical process algorithms and to facilitate integration of user selected sets of algorithms into operational physical process models. A model is created by selectively coupling the most appropriate process algorithms from the library to create an "optimal" model for the desired application. Where existing algorithms are not appropriate, new algorithms can be developed and incorporated in the library.

PRMS2008 Download

The Modular Modeling System is being ported from Unix Xwindows to java. The first release of PRMS running in the java interface will be PRMS2008. During this transition, the new java GUI may not have all of the functionality of the legacy system. However, unless you have an explicit need for the legacy MMS, we suggest that you try this beta version of PRMS2008 (current as of April 24, 2008).

Ensure first that you have a java runtime environment (JRE) current through version 6, update 5. If you need to install or update your java go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5. We are in the process of compiling the manual for PRMS2008 that will be available on our web site later this year. In the mean time descriptions of modules and processes from the legacy MMS framework and PRMS model can be used.
