Along with taking a patient's vital signs, some emergency departments are now starting to routinely test for HIV, based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and financial support from government grants.

Massachusetts General Hospital values its older, more experienced nurses and has a new initiative in place to not only retain these workers but to draw on their expertise in an effort to help keep newer nurses at the bedside.

With patients waiting long periods for treatment, Vanderbilt Medical Center's emergency department has created Team Triage, a multidisciplinary plan to decrease wait times. 

The shortage of allied health care professionals in California may be just as acute as the state's registered nurse shortage, but not as many people are aware of it.  According to a survey commissioned recently by Fenton Communications, only 24 percent of respondents were aware of the shortage of allied health workers, compared with 69 percent who were familiar with the state's nursing shortage.

Registered nurses serving as health coaches, providing high-risk elderly patients with one-on-one education, has led to a decrease in hospital readmissions at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and saved the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) $2.7 million.
