The biennial maintenance on the Statue of Freedom, which caps the Capitol Dome, was performed in May and June 2000. Conservators worked from a specially designed scaffold and inspected, cleaned, and waxed the statue to ensure continuing protection of the bronze.

The statue conservation was coordinated with the Dome Rehabilitation Project, and conservators used the exterior scaffold that was in place for access to Freedom and the exterior of the dome.
