ESRL-Managed Computer Room Recognized by Silver Hard Hat Award

Where would our science research be without the help of our high-performance computing capabilities? Global Systems Division's mission of continually producing short- and long-term forecast models is supported by a supercomputer that makes new discoveries in atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences possible. The new computing facility housing a NOAA supercomputer and managed by ESRL's Global Systems Division in Boulder, CO has been named "Outstanding Mechanical/Electrical Project" by Colorado Construction magazine. This Silver Hard Hat Award is featured [PDF] in Colorado Construction's October Issue that highlights Colorado's best construction projects in 2007.

Built by St. Andrews Construction Services Corp., the new 2,200-sq.-ft computer center can handle the rigorous environmental and electrical demands of NOAA's new research and development high-performance computer. The cooling, plumbing, electrical, architectural, and fire protection systems were designed with a sophisticated controls interface to help overcome significant challenges and limitations, resulting in a solid research and development platform. Completed on time and in budget, the facility has operated successfully since its completion. The formal award presentations on October 12th will recognize all parties involved in the success of the project including OZ Architecture, RMH Group Inc. (for mechanical/electrical design), St. Andrews Construction Services Corp. (general/electrical contractor), and U.S. Engineering Co. (mechanical contractor).

In spring of 2007, Colorado Construction placed a call for entries for their Gold Hard Hat Awards. All nominations were reviewed by a panel of industry judges who awarded projects based on design quality and innovation, craftsmanship, contribution to the industry, solution of unique design and construction challenges, and overall excellence.

Modern data processing equipment requires more power and cooling within a robust environment, and this new NOAA data processing center fully addresses these issues. The facility is both highly reliable and resilient, accommodating NOAA's high-performance computing needs now and in the future. This will enhance NOAA's ability to facilitate the efficient and timely delivery of products and services that will lead to better understanding our Earth's changing system.
