Health Insurance Statistics

Health insurance coverage improves access and quality of medical care and contributes to the overall health of Americans.

Recent data on health insurance show improvement in coverage for both children and adults:

  • In 2005, 14.2 percent of Americans were currently without health insurance, down from 15.4 percent in 1997.
  • Children also experienced the greatest increase in coverage in 2005, with 8.9 percent uninsured compared with 13.9 percent in 1997.

Although the percentage of uninsured declined, there were still 41 million without insurance.
