Office of Environmental Management
Packaging and Transportation

The Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies have a successful 50 year history in transporting radioactive materials. In its years of moving radioactive hazardous material (HAZMAT) the DOE has not had a single fatality related to the hazardous or radioactive material cargo. As the mission of the Department has changed, there has been a significant increase in the number of radioactive waste/material shipments. As the Office of Environmental Management continues its mission, transportation will continue to play a key role in the cleanup efforts. The U.S. Department of Energy’s transportation mission is to meet future challenges to develop and maintain transportation baseline resources, including effective strategies, techniques, methods, policy and guidance for safe, efficient, cost-effective transportation of materials. This success, based on adherence to applicable regulations, has at its basis a commitment to organizational and technical excellence. The goal is the safety of the public, the worker and the environment as we economically transport the materials of the DOE.
