Voters Approve Regional Transit

Voters in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties approved the Rio Metro Regional Transit District's proposed tax levy, which will raise an estimated $26 million a year for the transit district.

The counties of Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, Taos and Los Alamos passed the North Central Regional Transit District transit tax, which will raise $8 million a year.

The initiatives will increase local gross receipts taxes by one-eighth of 1 percent -- the equivalent of 12.5 cents per $100 -- to pay for expanded transportation services.

Half the estimated revenue in the Rio Metro District will be dedicated to operating and maintaining the Rail Runner, which is to begin running to Santa Fe by the end of the year, said Lawrence Rael, executive director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments, which oversees rail service operations for the state.

The other half will go toward expanded bus and transit connections for rural areas in Sandoval and Valencia counties, he said.

Planning for Transportation in a Growing Urban Area

various_transportation.jpgDid you know that the greater Albuquerque area is expected to reach a population of one-million by 2021?  The Mid-Region Council of Governments plays a critical role in planning for our region's current and future drivers, riders, and cyclists through programs like the Mid-Region Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Through this program, we create a number of transportation plans that demonstrate how federal transportation funds will be used in the Albuquerque metropolitan planning area, including a long range plan, a short range implementation program, and a system for addressing congestion problems in the urban area. Who helps us make these important decisions?  Policy makers and government officials who serve on the Metropolitan Transportation Board.

The 2030 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, adopted in April 2007, examines ongoing growth and development expected to take place and identifies the region’s transportation needs through 2030. The 2008-2013 Transportation Improvement Program, also adopted in April 2007, provides a means for implementing near-term projects.  Additionally, managing traffic congestion will serve an increasingly important role as the region grows, with more vehicles on roads and highways.
