Health Promotion for People with Disabilities

The Health Promotion for People with Disabilities (HPPD) Project was created in early 2002 with a grant award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The HPPD Project's main goal is to promote healthy lifestyles for people with disabilities by addressing such topics as health promotion and education, prevention of secondary conditions, accessibility, and ensuring opportunities to participate in recreational and social activities. The HPPD Project works with health care professionals, caregivers, community advocates, and citizens to raise awareness of the important issues concerning people with disabilities, and to educate Virginians that all people with disabilities have the right to "live like other people in the community and enjoy the benefits of society." (Olmstead Decision, 1999)

"When we engage people who are different than we are, we inevitably learn something about grace, about generosity, courage, and ease."
- Maya Angelou
