ESRL's Supercomputing Facility Featured in Contractor Journal
ESRL's relatively new computing facility, managed by the Global Systems Division in Boulder, CO, is featured in the current issue of "Electrical Contractor," the official publication of the National Electrical Contractors Association. The three-page, illustrated article focuses on the complexity of the advanced technology that was incorporated into the design of the over 2,000-square foot center. The story summarizes how St. Andrews Construction Services Corp. collaborated with a team of highly qualified and professional subcontractors to meet the demands of our scientists whose research is supported by high-performance computing.
With the catchy title, "Save the Rain Forecasts," the profile leads off with how "St. Andrews Helps Protect NOAA's Vital Climate Data" and continues with a paragraph describing NOAA's services, historic roots, and mission. The agency's role as a global leader on scientific and environmental matters is also mentioned. Spelling out the process and scope of the work, the article then details the construction challenges that faced the team. The new state-of-the-art cooling, plumbing, electrical, architectural, and fire protection systems that support the supercomputer make it possible for NOAA to provide high-quality services and products related to short-and long-term forecast modeling. The article concludes with how St. Andrews made this challenging effort a success by coordinating and collaborating with several parties, including NOAA.
In 2005, St. Andrews was awarded a government contract by the General Services Administration, which owns the David Skaggs Research Center, to be the prime and electrical contractor for the new computer facility. The 2,060-square foot center was completed on time and within budget in May of 2006. The facility was also named "Outstanding Mechanical/Electrical Project" by Colorado Construction magazine. This Silver Hard Hat Award is featured in Colorado Construction's October Issue that highlights Colorado's best construction projects in 2007.
