SAMHSA, the Office of Minority Health and the Indian Health Service (through the US Department of Health and Human Services) will join a multi-agency federal partnership to conduct Session 2 of 3 Tribal Consultation, Training and Technical Assistance sessions to occur in 2008.  Session 2 will address a number of challenges and issues facing tribal communities such as increased access to resources; health strategies and crime prevention; intervention and interdiction strategies; as well as treatment and detention needs for community based solutions and inter-jurisdictional cooperation. 

The Department of Justice/Office of Justice Programs (DOJ/OJP) has been the lead federal department/agency in organizing these trainings with SAMHSA since the initial four sessions in 2006-2007.  Additional Federal departments /agencies joining the collaboration with OJP, SAMHSA, OMH and IHS for Session 2 include: DOJ/Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, Office of Violence Against Women, Office of Tribal Justice and the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys; the U.S. Department of the Interior/Bureau of Indian Affairs; the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development/Office of Native American Programs; and the Small Business Administration/Office of National Native Affairs.

At the request of Tribal leaders, a Government-to-Government Consultation was added to the trainings and technical assistance sessions. A Consultation Day at Session 2 will occur on March 5, 2008 at the Westin Hotel. On March 6, the DOJ/SMART office will host a symposium, training and technical assistance session at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, and on March 7, general sessions and workshop presentations will be offered by the participating federal agencies.

SAMHSA workshops that will be offered on March 7, 2008 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel will include:

  • Drug-Free Community Support Grants
  • Circles of Care Grants
  • Co-Occurring Disorders
  • Native Aspirations: Year 2
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Grants
  • Targeted Capacity Expansion Grants
  • Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral & Treatment (SBIRT) Grants
