OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Awards
2008
This year, two papers co-authored by members of ESRL's Global Systems Division
(GSD) were among those selected for the NOAA OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper
Award. GSD joins Dr. Rick Spinrad, Assistant Administrator, OAR, in
congratulating co-authors Tracy Lorraine Smith, Stanley G. Benjamin, Seth I.
Gutman, and Susan Sahm on this significant achievement. Additionally, GSD
congratulates Seth Gutman and coauthors on another OAR Outstanding Scientific
Paper of 2008.

installation
NOAA's 24th Science On a Sphere® was installed the week of
August 4th at the International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS) in McAllen,
Texas.

Activities Available On Line
The POET Program – Protect Our Environmental Treasures – a
series of 15 environmentally-based student activities, is now available on

Technology Transfer Award
A four-member team from GSD has been selected as the recipient of the
2008 NOAA Technology Transfer Award in recognition of the LAPS technology
transfer to support development and implementation of the Precision Airdrop
System that improves airdrop activities worldwide.

ESRL's Supercomputing Facility Featured in Contractor Journal
ESRL's relatively new computing facility, managed by GSD, is featured in
the current issue of "Electrical Contractor," the official publication of the
National Electrical Contractors Association.

NOAA Research Receives Virtual Learning Prize
The New Media Consortium (NMC) honors Eric Hackathorn of NOAA's Earth
System Research Laboratory with one of the 2008 Virtual Learning Prizes for
his "Exploring Weather and Climate Change Through a Climate Time Line," a
proposal that will be developed by NMC for NOAA's Second Life virtual world.

NOAA Sponsors UAS Flights Over
Greenland
Starting July 2, NOAA will sponsor a three-week Unmanned Aircraft Systems
(UAS) mission over Greenland called Arctic MUSCOX. For this particular mission,
the aircraft will fly as low as 500 feet over unfamiliar terrain to monitor the
melt-off.

tool Science On a Sphere® (SOS).

Successful Installation of New Release of
Volcanic Ash Coordination Tool
Version 2.2A of the Volcanic Ash Coordination Tool (VACT) was recently
installed at three NWS sites and one US Geological Survey site in Anchorage,
Alaska.
