Susan Brandes (1954 - 2007)

It is our sad duty to inform you of the recent passing of Susan Brandes, a past Chair of the Division of Fuel Chemistry and an active member of the Division. Susan was employed in East Hartford, CT, at the United Technologies Research Center. She died on Sunday, July 8, 2007, in a tragic boating accident near Old Saybrook, CT. In addition to serving as Chair in 2001, Chair-Elect in 2000, and Past-Chair in 2002, Sue served for several years as Director of Advertising and was a past winner of the Richard A. Glenn Award for best paper. Before joining United Technologies, Susan was employed by Consol, the U.S. Department of Energy, and Mobil Oil. She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Swarthmore College, her M.S. from Drexel University, and her Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from the City College of New York, where she conducted pioneering experiments on coal pretreatment. There is a feeling of great loss for those of us who have had the privilege to work closely with Susan over the past several years and have had the opportunity to experience her enthusiasm, talent, and dedication.  The Executive Committee will discuss possible avenues to memorialize her many contributions to the Division of Fuel Chemistry.
