The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for exemplary heritage tourism and historic preservation programs and projects that meet 2009 Preserve America Presidential Award criteria. National Historic Trails Receive Chairman’s Award
August 15 — National Historic Trails, part of the National Trails System, today were honored with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Chairman's Award for Federal Achievement in Historic Preservation at its business meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. Read more.

ACHP Adopts Archaeology Policy Statement
The ACHP membership unanimously adopted the policy statement on Archaeology, Heritage Tourism, and Education at its Aug. 15 business meeting. Read more about the policy and its pupose here. Read the policy statement here.

Chairman Praises Designation of Hanford B Reactor
August 25 — ACHP Chairman John L. Nau, III, today praised the Department of Energy and Department of the Interior for seeking and celebrating the designation of the Hanford B Reactor as a National Historic Landmark. Read more.

Senior Policy Officials Meet About Section 3
Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Chairman John Nau hosted a meeting of Senior Policy Officials May 29, 2008 to discuss the impending progress reports under Section 3 of Executive Order 13287, "Preserve America." The meeting offered the officials a chance to engage in a discussion about individual progress reports and the development of the ACHP's own Section 3 progress report. Read more.

2008 Preserve America Presidential Awards Presented

Photo Credit: Tami Heilmann, Department of InteriorMay 12, 2008 — WASHINGTON, D.C.— Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States and Honorary Chair of Preserve America, today presented the 2008 Preserve America Presidential Awards at a White House ceremony. This is the highest national award for historic preservation achievement. The Presidential Awards winners are the following: African Burial Ground Project, New York, New York; Corinth and Alcorn County Mississippi Heritage Tourism Initiative; Lower East Side Tenement Museum, New York, New York; and Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program. Department of Energy Wins Chairman's Award

Nau, III presented the Chairman's Award for Federal Achievement in Historic Preservation to the U.S. Department of Energy for its exemplary efforts to preserve, interpret, and share sites and history related to the Manhattan Project. Council Members Approve Native Hawaiian Policy Statement
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) adopted its "Policy Statement on the ACHP's Interaction with Native Hawaiian Organizations" at its business meeting May 13, 2008. Peter Jemison, Native American member, introduced the policy, and Shad Kane, Native Hawaiian representative to the ACHP's Native American Advisory Group, offered a Hawaiian chant and a statement of support for the policy.

With this policy, the ACHP is acknowledging Native Hawaiian traditional cultural knowledge, beliefs and practices; committing to work with Native Hawaiian organizations to fully consider the preservation of places of importance to them; and acknowledges the important contributions of Native Hawaiian organizations to the national historic preservation program. Expert Panel to Explore Preservation Program
To satisfy a Preserve America Summit recommendation, the Department of the Interior and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation have created a 10-member expert panel to evaluate the current federal historic preservation program and make recommendations toward its continuous improvement. Class in Hawaii The ACHP is pleased to announce its very popular Section 106 Essentials training schedule for 2008. We're offering nine great nationwide locations this year. Web-based Archaeology Guidance Now Available
Washington, D.C.—The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has developed new archaeology guidance to assist federal agencies in meeting their responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The guidance is available at: www.achp.gov/archguide. Read more...
