Economic Policy Fellowships

CBO's economic policy fellowships establish a vital link between the research community and the agency. CBO provides the Congress with objective, timely, nonpartisan analyses to assist economic and budgetary decisions and with the information and estimates required for the Congressional budget process. That subject matter demands a broad reach because it reflects the wide array of activities that the federal budget covers and the major role that the budget plays in the U.S. economy.

Fellowships can provide experienced economists with a unique opportunity to address complex budgetary and economic policy issues. CBO is especially looking for people specializing in macroeconomics, health economics, financial economics, and public finance but welcomes applications from economists working in other areas. Fellows conduct research, use the agency's data and facilities, and work daily with colleagues at CBO to contribute to analyses and publications. Fellows are also able to participate in professional development opportunities and are in an excellent position to draw on the resources of professionals at CBO and other federal agencies, as well as the extended policy community in Washington, D.C.
 

Conditions of Appointments and Benefits

During their appointment, fellows must conduct their research at CBO in Washington, D.C., and will be subject to the agency's ethics and security requirements. CBO has flexibility in setting appointment terms:

• Length of appointment can vary depending upon the project and individual circumstances;
• Fellows can work a full- or part-time schedule; and
• Fellows can become CBO employees or, in some instances, maintain employment with their permanent employer.

Resources available at CBO include technical and secretarial support; library facilities with borrowing privileges at the Library of Congress; access to in-house databases and other data sources; and cutting-edge computer resources. Funds may be available to accommodate specialized needs for microcomputer software, hardware, or data not already available.

Salaries will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. CBO offers benefits, a work environment, and a location that are excellent.
 

Qualifications

Candidates should have:

• A Ph.D. or equivalent education;
• Considerable expertise in their field;
• A commitment to undertaking analysis of interesting real-world issues in economics and public policy; and
• A recognized research and publication record.
