The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) seeks the guidance of Tribal leaders on the delivery of health care for American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) served by Medicare, Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) or any other health care program funded by CMS. CMS accomplishes this in several ways. - Tribal Technical Advisory Group (TTAG) – serves as an advisory body to CMS, providing expertise on policies, guidelines, and programmatic issues. The 15 members of the TTAG are elected Tribal leaders (or their designated employees with authority to act on their behalf) selected from the 12 administrative units (Area Offices) of the IHS and representatives National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) and the Tribal Self-Governance Advisory Committee (TSGAC) designated by Tribal leaders to act on their behalf.
- Consultation – CMS conducts annual Tribal consultations with federally recognized Tribes in the Regions and is in the process of developing a formal consultation policy. The guiding principle of the policy is to ensure that broad based input is sought by CMS prior to taking actions that have the potential to affect federally recognized tribes.
- National Indian Health Board (NIHB) – CMS contracts with NIHB to manage operations for TTAG. NIHB maintains TTAG information on their web site.
