Matthew Well Named Public Affairs Director

Washington, DC, April 5, 2004 - The Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that Matthew Well has joined the agency as Director of the Office of Public Affairs. In this position, Well will serve as the agency's principal spokesperson, responsible for the agency's day-to-day media relations and public relations about Commission activities. He will report to the Managing Executive for External Affairs, Laura L. Cox, who is responsible for strategic oversight and management of public affairs, legislative and intergovernmental affairs, and investor education for the Commission.

Well, 32, is a veteran communications and media affairs strategist with more than 10 years of experience. He most recently served as the Director of Public Affairs for the American Tort Reform Association where he developed and executed national and state communications strategies.

Well has a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
