New York State Agencies kick off Innovative Planning and Housing Initiative for older New Yorkers.

ALBANY – (September 3, 2008) – The NYS Office for the Aging and Department of State are launching an innovative new project called, "Planning and Zoning Initiative: Housing for Older Persons," that is designed to help communities plan for the housing and community design needs of the State’s older population. The project will launch on September 4 by New York State's Office for the Aging Director Michael J. Burgess and Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, and will include over 100 experts in the areas of housing, zoning, planning, universal design, land-use, energy efficiency, and green building development. Mature Worker Task Force

First annual report to the Governor and the Legislature on the Mature Worker Task Force which is organized to improve economic development and the economic security of older adults through opportunities that recognize the value of mature workers and also seek to retain, retrain and offer second careers that will fill anticipated areas where there will be a labor deficit. The Mature Worker Task Force will identify and develop sound practices for employing mature workers in the 21st Century. Click here to view the report. Workforce Training and Education Listening Sessions Report Released

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and the State Society on Aging of New York (SSA) are pleased to release our joint final report, "Working with Older Adults: Charting the Future of Workforce Training and Education in New York -- Listening Sessions Summary and Next Steps."[View this report in PDF] The Report provides information, strategies, and suggestions obtained from a series of eight Listening Sessions held across New York State between 2006 and 2007 that brought together older adults, faculty and educators, planning and service personnel, state and local government representatives, and advocacy groups to focus attention on the critical issues we face in workforce training and education in order to successfully prepare New York State's diverse workforce to interact and work with older adults and their families.

Delay of Request for Applications

The expected posting of the Request for Applications (RFA) for the Enriched Social Adult Day Services Demonstration Project has been delayed. It is anticipated that this RFA will be available in early Fall of 2008. NYSOFA will release further information when available and we encourage you to continue to check this website.

New York Selected to Participate in National Governor's Association Initiative on Civic Engagement

Governor Paterson recently received notice from the National Governor's Association that New York was among 6 states selected to participate in a National Governors Association 's Policy Academy that will address issues related to engaging the elderly in volunteering and employment opportunities in the future. State Office for the Aging Grant Provides End of Life Care

Michael J. Burgess, Director of the New York State Office for the Aging, today announced the release of funds to provide end of life care to individuals. The grants will be used by community organizations to help persons 60 and older who are functionally impaired and have been diagnosed with a serious illness that has reached a terminal or end-stage point. NYSOFA Officials Deliver Testimony of Issues of Importance to New York's Older Residents

Michael J. Burgess, Director of the New York State Office for the Aging, Laurie Pferr, Executive Deputy and Greg Olsen, Deputy Director of the Division of Policy, Management and Public Information, recently delivered testimony before committees of the New York City and New York State legislative bodies. Director Burgess' testimony focused on New York City's plan to modernize programs and services serving older city residents and Mr. Olsen's testimony addressed geriatric mental health issues and recent activities coordinated by the state to address these issues.
