Education Program

The DVI Education Unit provides statewide educational services to children, ages birth through high school graduation, who have a visual impairment. Certified teachers of the visually impaired provide services, which include assessment, direct instruction and/or consultation services. This is provided to families and to the school districts in Delaware, which have qualified visually impaired students.  Infants and toddlers receive services in the home or at other early intervention settings. Child/Youth Counselors provide assistance and support to families who have just learned their child has a visual impairment or who have just moved to the area.

The DVI Education Unit assists in providing appropriately formatted materials and adaptive equipment to visually impaired students, such as Braille and large print. Aids and equipments that will assist the student in the classroom are also provided.  The Education Department staff also facilitates low vision examinations. Child/Youth Counselors provide activities, which will encourage developmental skills and adaptive skills, such as visual, tactual and auditory activities.

Our certified teachers of the visually impaired provide instruction in Braille or in the use of adaptive technology. They also provide consultation to the families and school staff on how to meet the educational needs of a student with visual impairment. Our teachers are a team member of the Individualized Educational Plan team and participate in writing and implementing educational goals and providing supports and accommodations. Child Youth/Counselors implement supports for young children through the IFSP.

The DVI Education Department works closely with the Delaware Department of Education, Child Watch, and other organizations to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for visually impaired students in Delaware.
