Customers' Communications Options

Relay South Dakota provides optional ways for your call to be handled. When communicating with a CA, you may request one of the following:

  • Ask the CA to type and speak exactly what is said. (Result: The CA will reproduce the exact conversation.)
  • Ask the CA not to announce your call. (Result: The CA will not initially ask the called party if he or she has ever received a relay call, and will not explain the service.
  • Ask the CA to use voice or hearing carry-over. (Result: This provides direct communication when callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or Speech disabled use their own voice or hearing.
Relay South Dakota Billing Procedures

  • There is no charge for using the-relay service within your local calling area.
  • Long distance calls made through Relay South Dakota will be billed at a reduced rate.
This discount is given to compensate for the additional time needed to place a relay call.

  • Direct dial, collect calls, third party calls, and calling cards are welcome through the relay
Service. Simply identify your billing method.

  • If you want to bill your long distance call through your preferred long distance company,
Notify the CA before the call is made.

State-to-State/International Calling
Relay South Dakota lets you place calls to and receive calls from anywhere in the United States. In addition, Relay South Dakota enables you to make international calls to anywhere in the world. Dial 1-800-877-1113 (TTY/ Voice Users) to make international calls from the U.S. or dial 605-224-1837 from another country to access Relay South Dakota.

Computer Call Processing
Computer users can access Relay South Dakota by dialing 1-800-877-1113. Set your communications software to follow this protocol at speeds ranging from 300 to 2400:
a. 8 bits b. No Parity c. 1 Stop Bit d. Full Duplex.
(Note: It may be helpful to set your "time out" to 100 seconds.)
When calling at a rate of 300 or below, follow the above settings using Half Duplex.

What To Do In An Emergency
In case of an emergency, TTY users should call the TTY-equipped 9-1-1 center or emergency services center in their South Dakota community. You will need to verify the phone number for emergency TTY calls in your area.

Remember: Calls placed directly and immediately to the local TTY emergency number can save valuable time in urgent situations.

Calling Tips

Please have the phone number ready. When the CA answers, give him or her the area code and number you want to call. Feel free to use American Sign Language. Direct your conversation to the voice user as if the CA were absent. The CA will relay everything that is typed. Please do not direct comments to the CA during your conversation, because these phrases will be relayed as well. When you leave a message, you may also want to indicate that you have called through Relay South Dakota.

Calling Tips

Direct your conversation to the TTY user as if the CA were absent. The CA will then relay all of your message, word-for-word and background noise. Please do not direct comments to the CA during your conversation, because these phrases will be relayed as well. When you leave a message, you may also want to indicate that you have called through Relay South Dakota.

What is Relay Service?
Telecommunications relay service provides full telephone accessibility to people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled. Specially trained Communication Assistants (CAs) complete all calls and stay on-line to relay messages either electronically over a Teletypewriter (TTY) or verbally to hearing parties.

The service, known as Relay South Dakota in your state, is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no restrictions on the length or number of calls placed. This valuable communications tool gives all individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled the opportunity to make personal and business calls just like any other telephone user.

Both TTY and voice users may initiate calls through Relay South Dakota. The toll-free access number

Confidentiality and Ethics
Relay South Dakota is strictly confidential. All calls will be kept private, and no records of any conversations will be maintained. CAS will not share information regarding the contents of any relay call.
