The following waste is prohibited in trash containers or convenience centers. See Commercial/Non-residential Recycling for recycling options for some of these materials.

  • Construction/demolition waste (allowed only in opentop containers) construction material is defined as but not limited to concrete, sheet wall, lumber, and carpeting. Customer may take these materials to Southwest Landfill at (505) 242-2020 or Rio Rancho Landfill at (505) 892-2055. Please call for further information.
  • Hazardous waste (RCRA), toxic waste (TSCA)*
  • Radioactive waste
  • Industrial process waste
  • Infectious (biomedical) waste**
  • Treated formerly characteristic hazardous (TFCH) waste
  • Pesticides or herbicides (FIFRA)
  • Automotive batteries
  • PCB's or bulk liquids
  • Motor oil
  • Asbestos or sludge
  • Ash, offal
  • Dirt
  • Dead animals. For disposal of dead animals, call Animal Control at (505) 768-1975.
  • Highly flammable or explosive materials. Producers of these materials should immediately notify the Mayor's office at (505) 768-3000.
  • Hot ashes or cinders, smoldering coals, greasy or oily substances liable to spontaneous ignition. Refuse of this type should be placed in non-combustible containers on a non-combustible surface at least 2 feet from any combustible wall, partition, or exterior window opening and at least 10 feet away from any other combustible materials. Ashes or cinders shall be cold for at least twenty-four hours prior to the scheduled time of collection and placed at the collection point in containers of cardboard or similar material. Containers shall not exceed thirty (30) gallons or weigh more than fifty (50) pounds.
  • Contaminated soils. Contact Solid Waste Management's Environmental Compliance Monitor at (505) 836-8795 for information on proper disposal.
  • Any other waste as determined by the Solid Waste Management Department.

*Hazardous waste includes materials such as paints, poisons, and corrosives. See information on identifying and safely disposing of hazardous waste.
**Infectious waste includes apparel, bedding, untreated biomedical waste, or any substance that poses a potential risk of transferring diseases to humans. Contact the City of Albuquerque's Environmental Health Division at (505) 768-2600 for proper collection and disposal.
