SRTM30_PLUS Topography and Bathymetry (12/9/05)
This is a 30 second global elevation (topography and bathymetry) dataset available as a single NetCDF file (43200x21600 gridpoints, +/-179.9°E, +/-89.9°N). The original dataset is published as separate binary files at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (http://topex.ucsd.edu/WWW_html/srtm30_plus.html).
WOCE Global Data V3.0 (12/20/02)
A large collection of datasets from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, which are supplied by the National Oceanographic Data Center. The local copy for GFDL access only is stored on data1.gfdl.noaa.gov and organized in the same way as the original distribution DVDs with the same web-based interface: disk 1, disk 2.
"ETOPO2" Topography Dataset (8/27/02)
A 1/30° (10800x5401 gridpoints) global elevation (topography and bathymetry) dataset assembled from a number of different sources. It is one of the most complete high-resolution global elevation datasets currently available.
"Smith & Sandwell" Topography Dataset (1/9/01)
A 1/30° (10800x6336 gridpoints) nearly-global elevation (+/-72° topography and bathymetry) dataset from UCSD, created by David T. Sandwell, Walter H.F. Smith, et al., is available for general use at GFDL. It was assembled from many different sources and its main goal seems to be greatly improved bathymetry over the older ETOPO5 and TerrainBase datasets.
1/12° Topography Dataset (3/4/99)
A 1/12° (4320x2160 gridpoints) global elevation (topography and bathymetry) TerrainBase dataset is available for general use at GFDL. (This was actually announced some time ago; i.e., October 1996.) See the GFDL TerrainBase web page for more information, plus a couple of impressive visualizations of the data.
Hint: You can subset the data from the netCDF versions of files using ncks; e.g.:
ncks -d longitude,340.,350. -d latitude,10.,12. \ /archive/hnv/SS_topo/SS_2min_topo.nc /tmp/ss-topo-subset.nc
We also have a number of datasets on CD-ROM in the GFDL library.
Anyone with datasets they wish to make available for general use should contact the Visualization Specialist in room 104A to have it added to this page.
