Tribal Initiatives - Recent Events Archive

September 2005 – Senior IGA staff attended the Wireless Infrastructure Conference and Exposition in Hollywood, Florida, sponsored by the Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA) and participated in a panel discussion focusing on the tower construction siting review process, the Best Practices Agreement between the FCC and the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET), and the laws governing tribal consultation.

August 25, 2005- Regional Regulatory Roundtable on Section 106 Review and the FCC’s New Tower Construction Notification System, Birmingham, AL.

July 2005 - “FCC-NCAI ITI Albuquerque Regional Workshop and Roundtable,” the fourth annual ITI workshop, was held in Albuquerque, NM, hosted in the context of the trust relationship shared by the FCC and Tribal Nations, by the FCC and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) to examine technological issues regarding telecom deployment on Tribal lands and the related economic empowerment of Indian Country. Over 160 attendees, including Tribal leaders and technology representatives, and economic development and community planning managers, discussed the development of broadband services, accessing wireless spectrum, universal service support regulations involving Tribal governments, radio broadcasting, and homeland security and public safety communications planning.

March 2005 – CGB co-hosted the “3rd Annual Dialogue on Telecom Access in Indian Country” in D.C. with NCAI to promote government-to-government discussion between members of NCAI’s Telecom Subcommittee and several Commissioners and high-level FCC staff.

March 2005 – Senior staff of CGB/IGA and the Media Bureau met in D.C. with managers of the new Center for Native American Public Radio (CNAPR), which represents the 33 Tribal radio stations presently operating in the US, to discuss broadcast issues and related outreach efforts in Indian Country.

March 2005 – IGA’s Tribal Liaison spoke about the FCC’s ITI program, homeland security interoperability issues, the enhanced Lifeline/Link-Up program for Tribal lands, and the FCC-USET Best Practices and other tower siting issues at a seminar sponsored by the Muskogee (Creek) District Court, Oklahoma Bar Association and Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee, OK, entitled “Doing Business in Indian Country 2002.”

March 2005 – Senior staff of CGB and WTB participated in several panel discussions on the tower siting review process conducted during CTIA’s 2005 Conference in New Orleans, LA.

February 2005 – The FCC co-hosted a roundtable on FCC-USET Best Practices and tower siting review with the United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. (USET).

February 2005 – CGB and WTB senior staff maintained an information booth at the 18th Annual RES2005 Economic Development Summit in Las Vegas, sponsored by the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development.

February 2005 – CGB senior staff addressed ATNI’s Telecom and Utilities Subcommittee and participated in Tribal consultation on homeland security and interoperability issues at ATNI’s Mid-Year Conference in Portland, OR.

January 2005 – CGB and WTB senior staff met with members of NCAI’s Telecom Subcommittee, the Native Networking Policy Center, and the Native Networking Coalition in D.C. to discuss the agenda for the upcoming “3rd Annual Dialogue” with NCAI concerning homeland security, broadband deployment in Indian Country, and spectrum availability.

December 2004 -- CGB and IGA senior staff participated in panels on the FCC’s Nationwide Programmatic Agreement, FCC-USET Best Practices, and the Tower Construction Notification System (TCNS) at CTIA’s seminar in D.C.

November 2004 – The third “ITI Regional Workshop and Roundtable” was held on the Coeur D’Alene reservation in cooperation with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI), and attended by over 88 Tribal representatives.

November 2004 -- CGB hosted a Lifeline/Link-Up “Train the Trainer” workshop with the Confederated Tribes of the Coleville Reservation in Nespelem, WA.

October 2004 – CGB staff attended NCAI’s Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale,FL

October 2004 – CGB and IGA senior staff addressed USET’s Board of Directors at USET’s Annual Meeting and EXPO on the Oneida Indian Nation’s reservation in Verona, NY, and announced adoption of the FCC-USET Best Practices for the tower siting review process.

September 2004 - the FCC and Navajo Nation co-sponsored a workshop for Tribal members regarding select telecom issues, including universal service, spectrum availability, homeland security, and tower siting.

September 2004 - CGB senior staff participated in a panel discussion at TribalNet’s 5th Annual Tribal Technology Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

September 2004 - CGB senior staff addressed universal service and telecom deployment issues at ATNI’s 51st Annual Conference in Polson, MT.

September 2004 - CGB senior staff met with members of the Navajo Nation Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to discuss telecommunications deployment issues, including rights-of-way issues.

September 2004 – CGB senior staff met with tribal leaders of the Tohono O’odham, Colville, and Coeur D’Alene tribes to discuss homeland security issues.

August and April 2004 - CGB senior staff met with tribal leaders of the Taos Pueblo, Taos, NM, to discuss tower siting issues.

June 2004 - CGB and WTB senior staff demonstrated the Tower Construction Notification System (TCNS) to Tribal leaders and preservation officials at the USET Semi-Annual Meeting on the Florida Seminole Reservation.

June 2004 - CGB and WTB senior staff addressed several issues in plenary, breakout and Telecom Subcommittee sessions at the NCAI Meeting on the Mohegan Reservation in Connecticut, and announced the release of the FCC’s draft Homeland Security Action Plan.

June 2004 - CGB senior staff addressed telecom, homeland security and historic preservation issues at the Navajo Nation IT Summit in Albuquerque, NM.

May 2004 - The second “ITI Regional Workshop and Roundtable” was held in Rapid City, SD in cooperation with the National Tribal Telecommunications Association, and attended by over 150 persons and over 40 Tribes.
