Emerging Trends & People with Disabilities: Public Consultation

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is gathering public input for a study of emerging issues and trends affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Information gathered will be used in the development of NCD's next annual progress report to the President and Congress. The Council is seeking input on disability issues including health, housing, employment, insurance, transportation, assistive technology, recreation, emergency preparedness, early intervention and education. Suggestions should be sent to NCD by July 22, 2008 via email - type "Emerging Trends" in the subject line.

New VA Rules for Specially Adapted Housing Grants

Before the change in the law eligible veterans and servicemembers could receive special adaptive housing grants of $10,000 or $50,000 from VA only once. Now they may use the benefit up to three times. VA has mailed more than 16,000 letters to eligible veterans, reaching out to those who used only a portion of their grant or who decided not to use the grant even after initially qualifying.

$1.5 Billion to Support Homeless Programs Nationwide

This funding will offer transitional and permanent supportive housing to more than 168,000 homeless individuals, and support programs that help to pay rent and provide permanent housing for disabled homeless individuals and their families.

$18 Million in Grants to Fight Housing Discrimination

The President's New Freedom Initiative: The 2007 Progress Report

Announced in February, 2001, the New Freedom Initiative is President George W. Bush's plan to tear down barriers to full integration into American life that remain for many of the 54 million Americans with disabilities. This report highlights the accomplishments of the Administration in implementing the President's vision and builds upon the reports issued in May 2002 and May 2004.

First Meeting of Emergency Transportable Housing Advisory Committee

The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) has established an advisory committee to assist it in developing accessibility guidelines for emergency transportable housing. The first meeting of the committee was held September 24 and 25, 2007.
