QUICKTAB

[an error occurred while processing this directive] QUICKTAB is a menu-driven package for rapidly producing frequency distributions and cross-tabulations. QUICKTAB allows persons with little or no computer experience to analyze the contents of a data file. It is intended for use by demographers, analysts and other data users.

QUICKTAB is a tabulation component of the Integrated Microcomputer Processing System (IMPS), a series of software packages for entry, editing, tabulation, estimation, analysis, and dissemination of census and survey data. IMPS was developed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Distribution of IMPS is funded jointly by the Bureau of the Census and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Tabulation Capabilities

Processing Methodology

Unlike the CENTS publication tabulation system, QUICKTAB is completely menu-driven and therefore does not require learning a special programming language. You can tabulate the entire data file or specify a restricted universe for tabulation. QUICKTAB also allows you to specify a data item to be used as a weight for tabulation. QUICKTAB does not have all the flexibility of CENTS in areas such as table formatting or production of geographical aggregations and is not meant as a replacement for CENTS.

QUICKTAB allows you to produce frequency distributions of any or all data items on a file. It allows you to produce up to 100 cross-tabulations. The tabular results are displayed on the screen and can be printed if desired. You can save you tabulation specifications for later use on additional data files.

Data Dictionary

To use QUICKTAB, a description of the file to be entered must be given. To create this description, you use the Data Dictionary component of IMPS, which is provided with QUICKTAB. The Data Dictionary lets you give a name to each data item in the file, specify its location within a data record, and define the values it may have. These values are used by QUICKTAB to test items for valid values.

Performance

The speed of QUICKTAB depends on the number of tabulations being performed, the organization of the file being tabulated, and the type of microcomputer being used. On an 80386 microcomputer running at 20 MHz, QUICKTAB runs at a speed of about 80,000 records per minute, cross- tabulating any two data items.
