Media Advisory: Brookhaven Lab to Celebrate Start-Up of World’s Most Powerful Particle Accelerator

Interview Local Scientists Stationed Overseas for Historic Event

September 2, 2008

EVENT: Celebration of the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC will be the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. Just hours after CERN attempts, for the first time, to send a proton beam around its 16.7-mile-long tunnel, reporters will have the opportunity to interview scientists and engineers on site at Brookhaven and live in Geneva via two-way video.

WHEN: Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: LHC remote monitoring room, Physics Building, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York. Brookhaven Lab is on William Floyd Parkway, one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 on the Long Island Expressway.

DETAILS: In addition to serving as the U.S. host laboratory for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, Brookhaven plays multiple roles in this massive international undertaking, ranging from construction and project management to data storage and distribution. Journalists will hear about the numerous contributions made by Brookhaven and the United States at large. Scientists from the ATLAS experiment, as well as accelerator experts, will be on hand to explain first-beam events and LHC images projected through a live web feed from CERN. In addition, Brookhaven scientists stationed in Geneva at the LHC will be available to talk to reporters in real time via videoconference.

Experiments at the LHC will open new vistas on the deepest secrets of the universe, from new forces of nature to new dimensions of space. The ATLAS experiment may help scientists unravel particle physics mysteries such as the origin of mass and the identification of dark matter.
