About LASSO

NEW! Apply now for the 2008 session of the Los Alamos Space Science Outreach (LASSO) program. Applications will be accepted through April 18th.

Improving Space Science Education

The Science Education Team and LANL space science groups are committed to improving space science education throughout New Mexico and the nation.

Through various enhancement programs, we help students and teachers increase not only their space science content knowledge but also their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Space Science Projects

  • ACE, Advanced Composition Explorer: focus on solar wind composition
  • GENESIS, Solar Wind Sample Return Mission: focus on the solar wind elemental and isotopic composition
  • Lunar Prospector: remote sensing to explore the nature and composition of the Moon
  • LIBS, Mars Instrument Development Program: lasers used to determine chemistry of rock and soil particles; testing a prototype instrument for NASA's Mars exploration program
  • TWINS, Two Wide Angle Imaging Neutral Atom Spectrometers: focus on how the magnetosphere parts interact

LASSO Project Lessons, Activities

We have lessons and classroom activities developed for LASSO, a combination of ongoing NASA projects that include LANL science instrumentation and personnel. Teams of northern NM teachers prepared these lessons and activities, which are appropriately designed for various educational levels and based on actual LASSO project science.
