FOR RELEASE APRIL 4, 2005

Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Steven R. Blust today announced the designation of Irwin L. Schroeder as the Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Commission. Judge Schroeder, who has been an Administrative Law Judge with the Commission for more than a year, replaces Chief Judge Norman Kline who retired April 2, 2005.

Judge Schroeder was born in San Diego, California, and has an undergraduate degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, and a graduate degree from George Washington University. He earned his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and is a member of the California and District of Columbia Bars. Judge Schroeder came to the Commission from the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission where he served as a judge. Prior to that time, he served as a Hearing Office Chief Judge with the Social Security Administration. He also served as Regional Counsel and Assistant Chief Counsel for the Federal Highway Administration and as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Chairman Blust noted that "Judge Schroeder's extensive legal and governmental experience, including that gained over the last year with the Commission, will continue to benefit the FMC and those practicing before it."
