The Statistical Handbook of the Ball and Roller Bearing Industry is a collection of publicly available statistics and other information about the U.S. bearings industry in one volume. It is compiled as a service to industry, government, and academia and hopefully will contribute toward a better understanding of this critical industry in matters relating to defense production, international trade, antitrust policy, and other issues of significance.
The Office of Strategic Industries and Economic Security (SIES), located in the Bureau of Export Administration at the Commerce Department, is the focal point within the Department for national security issues relating to the defense industrial base. As such, a similar statistical collection was initially prepared as background material to a national security assessment of the ball and roller bearing industry in 1993; the third major study of the industry conducted by this office in the preceding seven years. Members of the American Bearing Manufacturers Association's Statistical Committee encouraged the Handbook's development in its present form and urged its appearance online.
The Handbook's Table of Contents provides an overview of information contained in the Handbook. Section B, titled "Economic Trends", is a brief overview of bearing industry developments since World War II. Section H, titled "Internet Addresses", lists the various online sources where most of the statistical information in the Handbook can be accessed for updating to the latest data available, and in some cases, namely trade data, obtained in greater detail.
The Handbook is generally updated once a year. To be notified when all or part of the Handbook is updated, please click on the appropriate button below. Companies and interested individuals are encouraged to notify SIES of any difficulties using the Handbook or incorrect information they encounter.
