Maritime Day
On May 20, 1933 the U.S. Congress approved by joint
resolution the designation of "National Maritime Day" on May 22 of each year.
Since then, America has celebrated this day in recognition of those U.S. Merchant Mariners
who have served their nation faithfully during peace and war. Throughout the United
States each May, many cities, civic groups, and maritime-related organizations hold
Maritime Day events to recognize the achievements and services of the U.S. Merchant
Marine.

On May 22, 2003 the Maritime
Administration held a Memorial Observance Ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington,
D.C., to honor American seafarers past and present. The ceremony was hosted by the U.S. Maritime
Administrator--Capt. William G. Schubert.
