Mission
The purpose of the Office of Accounting Policy is to improve
government wide accounting by providing guidance to the
Financial Management Service, the preparers of the Financial
Report of the United States Government, in conjunction with
Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the United States
Chief Financial Officer Council. This Office promotes and
facilitates efforts to develop and include more useful,
reliable and timely financial information in the Financial
Report.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) serves as Treasury's
representative on the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory
Board, which formulates and recommends accounting standards
for use by Federal agencies in the preparation of their
financial statements. These accounting standards are the
basis for consistent, reliable financial information in
Federal financial statements. The DAS is a Steering Committee
member for the Joint Financial Management Improvement Program,
which is a joint and cooperative undertaking of the Treasury,
General Accounting Office, OMB, and the Office of Personnel
Management working in cooperation with each other and other
agencies to improve financial management practices in government.
