Criminal Victimization, 2006
Presents estimates of rates and levels of personal and property victimization for 2006. National estimates are not comparable with those of previous years because of methodological changes to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) in 2006. The report provides annual victimization counts and rates for 2005 and 2006 for urban and suburban areas, where comparable survey methods were used. It discusses the methodological changes that were implemented and how they impacted the survey estimates. The estimates are drawn from the NCVS, an ongoing survey of households that interviews about 135,300 persons in 76,000 households annually. The report also includes data on violent crimes (rape/sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault and simple assault), property crimes (burglary, motor vehicle theft and property theft), and personal theft (pocket picking and purse snatching). Highlights include the following:
In 2006 —
- Males experienced higher levels of victimization than females. The rate of violent victimization for males was 26 violent victimizations per 1,000 males age 12 or older. Females experienced 23 violent victimizations per 1,000 females age 12 or older.
- An estimated 25% of all violent crime incidents were committed by an armed offender. The presence of a firearm was involved in 9% of these incidents.
- Violent and property crime rates in urban and suburban areas were stable between 2005 and 2006.
