CONSTRUCTION STATISTICS

On a monthly basis we track the numbers of housing units authorized by permits, started, sold or completed. We measure the dollar value of all construction put in place each month. We track residential construction in 30 metropolitan areas across the country each quarter, and the sales of new one-family houses in those areas each year. We tabulate and publish the dollar value of residential improvement and repair work each quarter. Our Census of Construction Industries, taken every five years, provides the most comprehensive overview of the construction industry available.

The 2007 Annual Housing Units Authorized by Building Permits data are available. The Building Permits series has the ususal revisions for 2007. Revised seasonal numbers back to January 2006 will be released with the April 2008 press release on Friday, May 16, 2008, at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

The U.S. Census Bureau has discontinued the Survey of Residential Alterations and Repairs (SORAR). The last published residential improvements and repairs data was the fourth quarter of 2007, which was released on May 1, 2008.

The Census Bureau's construction price indexes have been consolidated. The constant quality price indexes of new one-family houses sold and under construction, as well as the price deflator index of new one-family houses under construction can be accessed from the above or below links.
