Preventive Care Timelines and Risk Factor Tables

Put Prevention Into Practice

Clinician's Handbook of Preventive Services, 2nd Edition, 1998

A prevention strategy based on risk factors may increase or decrease the priority of specific services, increase or decrease the frequency of particular services, change the ages at which certain services become appropriate, or add or delete some services for individuals or populations. The following list contains some timelines for preventive care for both children and adults at normal risk as well as tables of clinical preventive services organized by risk factor category and target conditions.

The timeline and risk factor tables may help guide risk-based prevention strategies for populations and individual patients. They may also be used to augment discussions between patients and clinicians when considering preventive services. Ultimately, the decision to perform a particular service is based on the needs and preferences of informed patients in consultation with their health care providers.
