Ex-Im Bank and the Central Asia and Caucasus Regions

Since the year 2000 Ex-Im Bank has authorized financing to support more than $1.6 billion in exports of U.S. goods and services to the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus in support of the transportation, oil & gas and agricultural sectors. This total also includes financing for more than $125 million of services exports to various sectors of these economies.

The expansion of Ex-Im Bank's business in the region has been most pronounced in Kazakhstan. Authorizations for Kazakhstan in fiscal 2000 totaled $1.39 million. During fiscal year 2004 this figure reached $102 million. The year-to-date figure for FY2005 is $132 million, with more than $40 million in pending final commitments.

A second vital link between U.S. exporters and buyers throughout these regions is the Business Information Service for the Newly Independent States (BISNIS) within the Department of Commerce. BISNIS is the U.S. Government's primary market information center for U.S. companies exploring business opportunities in Russia and other Newly Independent States. BISNIS provides U.S. companies with the latest market reports and tips on developments, export and investment leads, and strategies for doing business in the region.
