Department of Homeland Security

The Environmental Measurements Laboratory (EML), a government-owned, government-operated laboratory, is part of the Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Laboratory supports the efforts of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) to advance and apply the science and technology required for preventing, protecting against, and responding to radiological and nuclear events.

Defending the homeland from radiological and nuclear threats represents one of the high-priority missions of the Department of Homeland Security. As an S&T ORD federal laboratory, EML's programs seek to improve the understanding of current and future threats through research, development, testing and evaluation. Pilot deployment programs transition equipment from the developing and testing phases to operational field trials and provide scientific interface with field end-users. The Laboratory's Technical Assistance and Outreach Programs are promoting acceptance of radiation countermeasures technologies and standards, providing technical reachback capability, and providing technical assistance on radiation monitoring and radiation protection to New York area operational-level and responder organizations.
