76th Annual Meeting of The United States Conference of Mayors

Mayor Chávez has traveled to Miami to take part in the 76th Annual meeting of the US Conference of Mayors. USCM is the official nonpartisan organization of cities. Each city is represented in the conference by its chief elected official; the mayor. “The primary roles of The U.S. Conference of Mayors are to, Promote the development of effective national urban/suburban policy; Strengthen federal-city relationships; Ensure that federal policy meets urban needs; Provide mayors with leadership and management tools; and Create a forum in which mayors can share ideas and information.”

At this meeting, Mayor Chávez will sponsor and co-sponsor many resolutions in hopes of setting a national agenda on a wide range of issues. To mention just a few, the first resolution submitted by the Mayor is Resolution Number 5, which urges support for the reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Act or HR 1328. Another resolution co-sponsored by the Mayor, Number 70, is urging the support of municipal water systems. It looks to encourage cities to phase out, where feasible, the government use of bottled water and promote the importance of municipal water. Other co-sponsors of this resolution are Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City, and Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago.

This is just a quick description of two of the Mayor’s resolutions at this year's meeting. To see a full list and text, please click here. As always, if you have any question please just call 311 and ask to speak with the Mayor’s Office.
