In 1985, as my wife, Katie, and I approached 50 years of age, we undertook a 3-month, 5000-mile bicycle trip across the country. Since then, we have completed several more long-distance bicycle trips. The knee and foot problems I have because of diabetes present no difficulties when it comes to biking. It is much easier to control my diabetes with long days in the saddle. In 2004, I participated in a 5-day, 350-mile group adventure in Montana. Ten of the 160 cyclists were older than my 67 years. These long trips are much easier with a routine of regular exercise. |
