Personalized Health Care Expert Panel Meeting:  (Report)
Summary Report

Author(s):  The Lewin Group

Organization(s):  The Lewin Group

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) commissioned the Lewin Group to convene an Expert Panel on Personalized Health Care (PHC) for a one-day meeting to provide input to the Office of the Secretary, HHS, toward realizing the integration of PHC into clinical and public health practice. The Expert Panel identified five main issues that need to be addressed to realize the full potential of PHC including, 1) demonstrating clinical validity and the clinical utility of technologies intended for PHC (e.g., gene tests); 2) identifying the economic, clinical, and public health value of PHC interventions; 3) reducing rather than exacerbating health disparities; 4) educating and engaging providers and patients; and 5) using databases to build evidence and inform clinical decisions.

Personalized Health Care Initiative Workshop: “Understanding the Needs of Consumers in the Use of Genome-based Health Information Services  (Event/Conference)

Efforts are underway in the private and academic sectors to find news ways to apply genomic discoveries for the benefit of consumers. Recently, several new services have been launched, aimed specifically at the consumer market. These services offer access to one's own genomic information and provide health-related and other information based on genotype, family history, and other medical features. These new services have occasioned considerable press and public attention. They come at a time when the medical community is undertaking a more engaged role in incorporating genomic resources into health care. Companies offering these services maintain that this information represents a new phase in empowering, engaging, and educating consumers in their health and medical decision-making. Meanwhile, others have questioned the value of these services for consumers, especially at this early stage of knowledge development. This workshop was aimed at enabling various stakeholders to share differing perspectives and discuss alternatives for helping consumers make informed use of genome-based health information, both now and in the future.
